New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, Tutankhamen
The most famous tomb in the Valley of the Kings, if not in the world, was probably not originally intended for the young Tutankhamen. But when he died unexpectedly in his teens, after no more than eight or nine years of rule, it was hastily converted, perhaps from the tomb of an important official. Tutankhamen's tomb is the only royal tomb found with its burial equipment still intact, although there were at least two attempted thefts of the tomb in antiquity. Tomb 62 was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922.
