New Kingdom, Dynasty 19, Rameses II
The tomb of Rameses II was one of the largest and best decorated in the Valley of the Kings, but its location meant that it suffered at least a dozen times from flash floods. Only recently archaeologists worked to clear it out and stabilize its weakened structure. The tomb follows the bent-axis plan of earlier Dynasty 18 tombs. Its burial chamber was the first to have a sunken central area and a vaulted ceiling and a side chamber has a figure of Asar (Osiris) carved in the rear wall, similar to the one found in Tomb 5.
